Our competence centre in Budapest was unique in its kind when it was established in 1999; three doctoral students came up with the idea, which caught the interest of the ThyssenKrupp group and led to the founding of the first R&D competence centre in Hungary. Our team has been developing electromechanical steering systems for almost 20 years. Originally employing three people, our centre currently has a staff of approx. 600 employees. Our competence centre in Budapest is part of the Steering business unit, which accounts for the one-fourth of the steering columns for cars worldwide. Throughout the business unit and even the entire group, software development is done exclusively in our competence centre.

Advanced development
The task of the Advanced Development Department is to analyse trends in auto industry and technology for the next 5-15 years, furthermore to prove the feasibility of applicable product ideas by developing prototype hardware and software.

Hardware development
Our department is responsible for developing the electronics of thyssenkrupp steering systems. Our tasks involve designing the control unit (ECU), the sensors, the motor, and the motor control software; as well as the integration and the testing of the above.

Our department works on the development and integration of the steering feel and steering functions related to electronic steering systems, such as lane keeping assist and side-wind compensation.

We develop electronic steering systems that use electromotive assistance instead of the traditional hydraulic systems that constantly require energy. This provides exceptional reliability, reduces fuel costs, and enables a series of comfort functions (e.g., cross-wind compensation, lane keeping assist, parking assistance). Our Budapest site is located in the 11th District, just a stone’s throw away from the city centre. The site is accessible by public transportation with trams no. 17 or no. 61 (Alsóhegy utca station), as well as buses no. 212 (Diószegi út) and 240 (Budaörsi út/Villányi út). Access by car is possible from the direction of Daróczi út or Alsóhegy út, with free parking available in the area.
